One Hand Washing the Other

by Nick Jaina

children pray for accidents
grown-ups pray for common sense
with one eye watching, one eye sleeping,
God plays with his marionettes

I stepped out walking in the early morning
I saw that thunder clouds were forming
over your house
I wondered what that was about...
one hand washing the other

now I wait for my regiment
I have not used my rifle yet
one eye watching, one eye sleeping
leaves me a tired boy

when I finally get that rest
in your room with my head on your chest
it would be so easy
I would wake up and see...
it's just one hand washing the other
